🕒 How This Guide Was Written

Our drivers operate at all six London airports on every shift. All rates were verified directly against official airport websites — heathrow.com, gatwickairport.com, stanstedairport.com, london-luton.co.uk, londoncityairport.com, and londonsouthendairport.com — plus the official LCY FAQ page confirming the £6.90/20 min Pick-Up Zone rate. Three major errors found in competing guides: Stansted Short Stay is £13 not £8 (verified March 2026 from physical signage); Luton Long Stay is 2 hours free not 1 hour (upgraded May 2026); London City is inside the ULEZ with no free pick-up option — most guides make no mention of either. Last verified: 18 May 2026.

Pick someone up from Heathrow and you are dealing with four terminals on different roads, a private hire holding zone, and a 29-minute clock. Go to Gatwick and it is simpler — two terminals, seven pick-up points, and two free hours in Long Stay if you time it right. Stansted catches people out every day: Short Stay is £13 for 30 minutes, not the £8 that most guides still quote. Luton has a physical barrier at CP1 — no ANPR, no midnight deadline, just tap your card before the barrier lifts. London City is the expensive one: inside ULEZ, no free parking option at all, £12.50 extra if your car is not compliant. Southend is simple but the 2.0 metre height limit in Short Stay takes out a lot of private hire vans. We cover every airport, every terminal, every zone, and every rate that other guides are still getting wrong.

1. Heathrow Airport (LHR) — 4 Terminals, AVA System, 29 Minutes Free

Heathrow is the one airport where getting the terminal wrong before you even arrive costs you real money. Four active terminals — T2, T3, T4, T5 — each on a different approach road, each with its own car parks. Drive to T3 when the passenger landed at T5 and you are looking at a 20-minute detour and a second potential parking charge. Pre-booked private hire vehicles use the Authorised Vehicle Area on Northern Perimeter Road (TW6 2EQ) as a free holding zone — the driver waits there, monitors the flight, and only moves to the terminal when the passenger says they are through customs. Black cabs queue at the feeder park. Uber and Bolt require the passenger to walk to Terminal Parking — no meet-and-greet inside the terminal.

The 29-minute free window works for short-haul passengers with hand luggage who clear arrivals in 20 to 25 minutes. For long-haul flights with bags, it is never enough — landing to terminal exit at Heathrow with checked luggage takes 45 to 60 minutes on a normal day. Gatwick and Luton's 2-hour windows are far more practical for that type of work. See Heathrow taxi prices for fixed fares. Full terminal detail in our Heathrow pick-up guide 2026.

2. Gatwick Airport (LGW) — 2 Terminals, 7 Pick-Up Points, 2 Hours Free

Gatwick is the easiest of the six London airports to work with. Two separate terminals — North and South — connected by a free 4-minute transit train. Each terminal has its own independent set of car parks, Long Stay zones, and pick-up points. Confirm the correct terminal with the passenger before entering the airport — driving to the wrong terminal and then correcting adds 15–20 minutes and a second potential Short Stay charge. Gatwick Short Stay is the joint cheapest paid rate alongside Luton at £7/30 minutes.

Gatwick Long Stay gives you 2 hours from the moment you enter, which covers even the worst long-haul immigration queues. Park, take the 5 to 7 minute shuttle, walk to international arrivals, wait at the Costa near the exit, help with bags, get back to the car — it fits inside 2 hours on virtually every flight we have ever done there. Payment for Short Stay uses ANPR cameras — no barriers, no machines at the car park — pay online at gatwickairport.com by midnight the following day. See Gatwick taxi prices. Full detail in our Gatwick pick-up guide 2026.

3. Stansted Airport (STN) — Single Terminal, £13 for 30 Minutes, Most Expensive

Stansted has one terminal and five colour-coded Short Stay zones — Orange, Red, Yellow, Green, Blue — arranged in concentric rings around the terminal. All five zones charge the same £13/30 min drive-up rate regardless of distance from the terminal. Orange and Red are the closest at 1–4 minutes on foot. Blue is the furthest at 10–12 minutes. The Mid Stay Free Zone gives 60 minutes at no cost and is the correct choice for any collection where the passenger's exact exit time is uncertain — which is most of the time.

⚠ Major competitor error: holidayextras.com and multiple other guides still quote Stansted Short Stay at £8/30 min. The correct 2026 rate is £13/30 min — verified from physical signage at the car park entrance, March 2026. If you arrive expecting to pay £8, you will pay £13.

Re-entry (Express Set Down)Within 30 min of previous visit+£20On top of zone charge — unique to Stansted

Stansted has one rule that catches a lot of drivers: if you enter the Express Set Down and come back within 30 minutes, you pay an extra £20 on top of whatever zone charge applies. The Express Set Down is drop-off only — never pull in there to pick someone up. If you circled and came back, that is a £20 penalty plus the zone rate. Not worth it. See Stansted taxi prices. Full detail in our Stansted pick-up guide 2026.

4. Luton Airport (LTN) — Physical Barrier, 2 Hours Free, EV Discount, Red Routes

Luton is the only London airport where you pay at a physical barrier as you leave — no ANPR camera, no midnight online deadline, just tap your card before the barrier lifts. Long Stay was upgraded to 2 hours free in May 2026 — most guides still say 1 hour, that is wrong now. The EV discount at CP1 is £1 for 30 minutes for 100% electric vehicles only — the only scheme like it at any London airport. And the red routes around the airport are not a suggestion: mobile CCTV runs 24 hours on Airport Way and every approach roundabout. The £95 PCN arrives in the post if you stop anywhere on the road.

🔔 May 2026 confirmed update: Luton Long Stay free window was extended from 1 hour to 2 hours. The official london-luton.co.uk passenger information page confirms the change. Most competitor guides still state 1 hour free — that figure is now outdated.

One condition on the EV rate that matters: it is 30 minutes maximum, 100% electric only — hybrids are out. Go one minute over 30 and standard rates apply to the whole visit, not just the overage. You also need to validate at the Priority Parking office on Level 2 before you get to the barrier — easy to miss if you have not done it before. The Long Stay 2-hour free window uses a shuttle from Bus Bay B at the terminal — allow the 10-minute shuttle each way when calculating total collection time. See Luton taxi prices. Full detail in our Luton pick-up guide 2026.

5. London City Airport (LCY) — Single Terminal, No Free Option, ULEZ Zone

London City is the smallest and most compact of the six London airports. A single terminal in the Royal Docks, Newham — 6 miles from the City of London and inside the ULEZ boundary. It is the only London airport where non-compliant vehicles face an automatic £12.50 ULEZ charge on top of all pick-up parking costs. It is the only London airport with no free pick-up option of any kind. No remote parking with shuttle bus exists — the airport sits on a narrow strip between two docks with no space for a remote car park. The Pick-Up Zone has a physical barrier at exit with card payment at machines.

Two pay points at London City: one at the pick-up area, one at the terminal entrance. Card only throughout — no cash anywhere on site. Do not stop on the forecourt even briefly — the cameras are running and charges apply immediately. For GTT's London City transfers, the ULEZ-compliant fleet means no extra charge on top of the fixed fare. For London City taxi transfers, GTT's ULEZ-compliant fleet absorbs both the parking and the ULEZ charge in the fixed fare.

6. Southend Airport (SEN) — Single Terminal, 15 Minutes Free, 2.0m Height Limit

Southend handles mostly leisure flights to European destinations — Alicante, Malaga, Faro, that type of route — with a single small terminal and car parks right opposite. Long Stay 3 gives 15 minutes free, which works for a passenger coming straight off a Ryanair flight with cabin baggage only. Anyone with checked bags will need longer. Mid Stay is the right zone for actual waiting — closer than Long Stay 3 and with no height restriction issues.

The 2.0 metre height limit in Short Stay catches private hire vehicles regularly. A standard Mercedes Vito sits at about 1.9m — borderline. A Viano or VW Caravelle with roof bars goes over. If your vehicle is over 2.0m or over 5.0m long, Mid Stay is the only legal option — PCNs are issued immediately in Short Stay for oversized vehicles. Southend is cashless. Red lines on the approach roads are enforced with CCTV, same as every other London airport. Full detail in our Southend airport guide.

How Black Cab, Uber and Pre-Booked Transfers Handle Pick-Up Charges

The pick-up parking charge is a separate cost from your taxi fare — and how it gets paid depends entirely on which type of vehicle you use. This is where most passengers get a surprise, particularly at airports where the parking charge is added after the journey.

Pre-booked GTT taxiIncluded in fixed fare at booking — nothing to pay at airportNot applicable — not Uber/BoltYes — name board inside arrivalsYes — price locked at booking

Uber and Bolt started charging 20% VAT on every London fare from 2 January 2026, after the Autumn Budget closed the Tour Operators' Margin Scheme loophole they had been using. A Heathrow to central London Uber that was £60 before is now effectively £72 with VAT — and that is before the airport adds the pick-up parking charge on top. A pre-booked fixed fare has none of that: no VAT variable, no parking charge added at the end, no surge.

AutoPay Setup — Gatwick, Heathrow and Stansted

If you work the same airport regularly, AutoPay is worth setting up. It registers your plate with the airport system so charges collect automatically — no midnight deadline to remember, no PCN risk from a forgotten payment. Takes 10 minutes to set up once and then runs itself.

Free Nearby Waiting Spots — Off-Airport Options

When a flight is running two or three hours late, even the Long Stay free window does not help. These are the spots drivers actually use near each airport when they need to wait it out:

Birchanger Green is where most Stansted drivers go for long waits — Costa, McDonald's, free 24-hour car park, and 3 minutes from Stansted Short Stay. Far better than sitting in the Mid Stay zone for an hour watching the departure board.

Blue Badge Pick-Up — All 6 London Airports 2026

Blue Badge treatment varies significantly across the six airports. Heathrow and Gatwick are the simplest — display the badge, park free. London City and Stansted both require pre-registration before your visit or the ANPR system still raises a PCN. Southend is the least generous — priority bays but no fee exemption at all.

The London City pre-registration is the one that catches people out most often. Displaying the Blue Badge in the windscreen does nothing — the ANPR camera reads your plate and issues a PCN if it is not registered in the system. Register via londoncityairport.com before you visit. Stansted is the same. Heathrow and Gatwick are simpler: badge in the windscreen, park in Short Stay, no charge.

How GTT Covers All 6 London Airports

Every GTT pick-up works the same way regardless of which of the six airports it is. We track the flight from departure — not from landing. We enter the correct zone at the right time: 20 minutes after touchdown for a domestic or short-haul, 50 minutes for long-haul with bags. We walk into arrivals and wait with a name board at the standard meeting point. You get 60 minutes of free waiting from actual landing — not scheduled landing. We carry the bags to the car. All parking across all six airports goes into the fixed fare you see at booking. For groups of 6 or more, the parking cost splits across the group in one fixed fare. At London City, our ULEZ-compliant fleet means no £12.50 surcharge on top of your fare.

Stansted is most expensive at £13/30 min. London City is £6.90/20 min with no free option at all. Southend gives 15 minutes free in Long Stay 3.

Which London airport has the longest free pick-up window?

Gatwick and Luton — both give 2 hours free. Luton was upgraded from 1 hour to 2 hours in May 2026. Stansted gives 60 minutes free in Mid Stay. Heathrow gives 29 minutes free in Park and Ride. London City has no free option. Southend gives 15 minutes free in Long Stay 3 only.

Is Stansted Short Stay really £13 for 30 minutes in 2026?

Yes. £13/30 min is the correct 2026 drive-up rate for all five Stansted Short Stay colour zones, verified from physical signage at the car park entrance in March 2026. Many major guides including holidayextras.com still quote £8/30 min — that is an outdated figure. Stansted is the most expensive Short Stay pick-up of any London airport at £0.43 per minute.

Does London City Airport have free pick-up parking?

No. London City is the only major London airport with no free pick-up option. The Pick-Up Zone starts at £6.90 for up to 20 minutes. There is no remote parking area with a free shuttle — the airport has no space for one. LCY is inside the ULEZ zone, so non-compliant vehicles pay an additional £12.50 ULEZ charge on top of all parking costs.

Is London City Airport inside the ULEZ zone?

Yes. London City is the only London airport within the ULEZ boundary. Non-compliant vehicles pay £12.50 daily to TfL alongside all parking costs. GTT operates a ULEZ-compliant fleet — no extra ULEZ charge at London City. For long-distance taxi journeys beyond the airport, GTT covers the full UK mainland — see areas we serve.

Which London airport uses a physical barrier for pick-up?

Only Luton. Terminal Car Park 1 uses a physical exit barrier — pay by card at the machine before driving out. No ANPR cameras, no midnight online payment deadline. All other airports (Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, London City) require online or machine payment after driving through barrierless ANPR zones.

What is the height restriction at Southend Airport Short Stay?

2.0 metres maximum height and 5.0 metres maximum length in Short Stay. Vehicles over these limits — including many vans, large MPVs and minibuses — must use Mid Stay only. Vehicles in Short Stay over the height limit may be clamped and issued a PCN.
