Clacton-on-Sea is right on the Essex coast — CO15 and CO16, at the end of the A120 corridor that runs westward toward London's airport network. If you live here and you are planning a trip abroad, you need to know two things: which airport is closest, and how to get there without overpaying or getting stuck. This page covers all of it — every airport, every fare, every route, what the trains are actually like, and what to do if your flight is at 6am.

The good news is that Stansted Airport is much closer to Clacton than people sometimes expect. At 49 to 53 miles, it sits at the western end of the same A120 you might use for a day trip to Chelmsford. You do not need to go through London at all. Gatwick and Heathrow are a different matter — those involve the M25 — but they are covered too.

A quick note on how these fares compare to other operators: LondonAirport-Taxi.com lists the Clacton to Stansted route from £106. Xpress Airport Transfer lists Clacton to Gatwick from £140. Blackberry Cars lists Clacton to Heathrow from £218, and Britannia Airport Cars from £201. GTT's fares start lower because the fares reflect the actual route cost without the overhead of rank-based operations.

Clacton to Stansted Airport — Everything You Need to Know

Stansted is the airport that makes the most sense for the vast majority of Clacton residents. It is the closest. It does not require going through London. And Ryanair uses it as its biggest UK hub — the UK's largest low-cost carrier — which means there are flights to Spain, Portugal, the Canaries, Eastern Europe, and dozens of other destinations that Clacton passengers book regularly.

The route — A133 and A120

When the driver picks you up from your address in Clacton, they head west on the A133. This road runs from the coast at Clacton through Great Clacton and out toward the A120 junction near Elmstead Market. From there, you join the A120 heading west — this is the main road that connects the Essex coast to Stansted. It passes through the Colchester bypass (which is where the only real congestion risk sits during rush hour), through Marks Tey, Coggeshall, Braintree bypass, Great Dunmow, and Bishop's Stortford. Just past Bishop's Stortford you pick up the M11 at Junction 8, and from there it is a short distance to the Stansted terminal.

Our drivers cover this route regularly — the A120 through the Colchester area, particularly between the A12 junction and Marks Tey, is where delays build up fastest during morning peak hours. The whole thing is approximately 49 to 53 miles. In light traffic — which means anything outside of weekday morning and evening peak — this takes 60 to 75 minutes. During rush hour, particularly the morning peak between 7am and 9am when the A120 through the Colchester area gets busy, allow 75 to 90 minutes. If your flight is very early morning, before 6am, the A120 is almost empty and 55 minutes from central Clacton to the terminal is realistic.

What Stansted Airport is like

Stansted has one terminal. That is the first thing worth knowing because both Gatwick and Heathrow have multiple terminals, which means getting to the wrong one is possible. At Stansted, there is one building. The driver pulls up directly outside the departures entrance. You walk in, and check-in is right there.

When you land, the driver is already inside the terminal waiting near the baggage reclaim exit with a name board. There is no shuttle bus to catch, no second terminal to navigate to. The Stansted layout is genuinely simple compared to Heathrow or Gatwick.

Which airlines fly from Stansted — and where

Stansted is Ryanair's biggest UK base. If you have ever seen Ryanair prices for flights to Spain or Portugal that seem very cheap, they are almost always from Stansted. The other main carriers at Stansted are easyJet, Wizz Air, and TUI.

Routes that carry the most Clacton passengers from Stansted include Malaga, Alicante, and Faro (the three main Spanish and Portuguese beach destinations), the Canary Islands (Gran Canaria and Tenerife), Dublin, Amsterdam, and Brussels for short breaks or business, and Eastern European destinations on Wizz Air — Budapest, Bucharest, Warsaw, and Krakow are popular routes with Essex communities. If your destination is any of these, Stansted is where you are going.

Fares by vehicle — Clacton to Stansted

8-Seater MinibusFrom £13088 large£16.25 (8 pax)
Executive Saloon (Mercedes E-Class)From £12033 large

The per-head numbers matter for families. A family of four going to Stansted in a saloon at £75 total is £18.75 each. Put seven people in a 7-seater MPV at £100 and that is £14.29 each — cheaper per person than almost any public transport alternative, and you go directly from your front door to the terminal. That is the real value comparison.

Taxi vs train — Clacton to Stansted

There is no direct train from Clacton to Stansted Airport. This is not a matter of opinion — there is literally no direct service. To get from Clacton Station to Stansted by rail, you need to: take a Greater Anglia train to Colchester (about 35 minutes), change at Colchester for a service toward Chelmsford, then continue toward London Liverpool Street and pick up the Stansted Express from there — which adds another 45 to 55 minutes just for that leg. By the time you add platform waits and the walk between platforms, you are looking at 2.5 to 3.5 hours, and you still need to get to Clacton Station in the first place.

Clacton to Stansted — taxi vs train comparison

Pre-booked taxi60–90 min£75£75 totalNoneYes
Train (3+ changes)2.5–3.5 hrs£25–£45£100–£180 total3+No — station to station
Drive and park at Stansted60–90 min£75–£250+ (parking)£75–£250+NoneYes

The only time the train beats the taxi is if you are travelling solo with hand luggage only, you have no time pressure, and you are comfortable managing the connections. For anyone with suitcases, a family with children, or a flight before 8am, the taxi wins on every measure including cost once you account for the full group fare.

Parking at Stansted is the other option some people consider. Short Stay for a week costs between £75 and £250 depending on how far ahead you book. Add fuel for the round trip — about £10 each way from Clacton — and you are at £95 to £270. A pre-booked return taxi from £150 for two journeys is often cheaper, and you do not have to drive yourself at 4am. For a full cost breakdown of pre-booked vs app-based options, see our Uber vs taxi comparison.

Clacton to Gatwick Airport

Gatwick is chosen when your airline does not operate from Stansted. British Airways is the main reason — BA does not use Stansted at all, so if you are flying BA to New York, Cape Town, or anywhere that BA serves, you are going to Gatwick or Heathrow. Norwegian is another reason, as are some charter operators and certain easyJet routes that are at Gatwick rather than Stansted.

The route and how long it takes

The route south from Clacton goes on the A133 to the A12, then the A12 southbound through Chelmsford toward London. You join the M25 anticlockwise at Junction 28, near Brentwood, and go all the way around to Junction 7. From J7 you take the M23 south to Gatwick. The distance is around 100 miles. In light traffic this takes about 2 hours. The M25 between Junction 28 and Junction 7 — that stretch passing the Dartford Crossing and heading south — is one of the busiest sections of motorway in the country. During weekday peak hours it can add 45 minutes to an hour. If you are travelling on a Friday afternoon before a bank holiday weekend, allow at least 3 hours from Clacton.

North Terminal or South Terminal?

Gatwick has two terminals, and they are not next to each other — a free transit train connects them that takes about 4 minutes. Getting to the wrong one means catching that train and adding 15 minutes. Check your flight booking confirmation and it will say which terminal. Here is the quick guide:

Gatwick Airport — North Terminal and South Terminal airlines
TerminalAirlines using this terminalDriver drop-off

South TerminalBritish Airways · Ryanair · Vueling · WizzAir · Virgin Atlantic · Aer Lingus · Jet2 (some)Directly in front of departures entrance — South side

When you book with GTT, you specify which terminal and the driver goes directly to the right one. If you are unsure at booking time, check your airline's website or your booking confirmation email — you will see it there. More detail on the Gatwick terminals and drop-off zones is on our Gatwick airport taxi transfer page and our Gatwick taxi guide.

Clacton to Heathrow Airport

Heathrow is the longest and most expensive route from Clacton — 100 to 110 miles depending on which terminal you are going to. It is chosen for British Airways long-haul, Virgin Atlantic, American Airlines, United, Lufthansa, and the major international carriers. If you are flying to the USA, South Africa, Australia, or most of Asia, you are probably going to Heathrow.

The route

The route is the A133 to the A12 southbound, then the M25 — but this time clockwise, going the opposite way around the ring from the Gatwick route. You follow the M25 past Dartford and then the M4 westbound into Heathrow. The difference in direction matters because it avoids the most congested sections of the M25. That said, the M25 anywhere near Heathrow — particularly at Junction 15 — is heavy during peak hours. Allow a generous margin if your check-in is before 9am or between 4pm and 7pm on weekdays.

Heathrow terminals — which one is yours

Heathrow has four active terminals. This matters more than at Gatwick because the terminals are further apart and the wrong terminal is a longer correction. Here is the guide:

Always tell us your terminal when booking — see our Heathrow drop-off charge guide for parking zone details. If you are flying BA to anywhere, it is T5. If you are flying Virgin or American to the US, it is T3. Everything else — check your booking confirmation. Getting this right at booking means the driver goes directly to the correct terminal and you are at departures with no fuss. Full terminal details on our Heathrow taxi transfer page.

Luton Airport and London City Airport

Clacton to Luton Airport

Luton is 65 to 72 miles from Clacton — the second closest of the five airports after Stansted. The route goes south on the A12, joins the M25, and then north on the M1 to the Luton junction. Off-peak this takes 85 to 115 minutes. From £100 for a saloon.

Luton is where Wizz Air has its main UK base. If you are flying Wizz Air to Hungary, Romania, Poland, Bulgaria, or Albania — routes very popular with Eastern European communities in Essex — Luton is where you are going. It is also easyJet's second largest UK hub, so some easyJet routes that are not at Stansted will be at Luton. Worth checking before assuming Stansted for any easyJet booking.

Clacton to London City Airport

London City Airport is 62 to 68 miles from Clacton via the A12 south and A13 through east London. Journey time 75 to 105 minutes. From £90 for a saloon. London City is a small airport designed for business travel — the runways are short and the aircraft are smaller. The airlines here are KLM Cityhopper to Amsterdam, British Airways CityFlyer to Edinburgh, Aberdeen, and European cities, and a handful of other business-focused routes.

Most Clacton passengers do not use London City unless they are travelling on business and their company specifically uses BA CityFlyer or KLM. If that applies, it is actually a very easy airport to use — one terminal, no shuttle buses, and the A13 route from Essex is direct.

Early Morning Flights — What to Know

Stansted is famous for very early Ryanair departures. Look at any summer schedule and you will see 6am, 6:15am, and 6:30am flights — these are cheap because nobody wants them, but plenty of people take them to save money. If you book one of these, here is what that means for your morning:

A 6am Ryanair flight at Stansted has check-in opening at around 4am and closing at 4:45am. You need to be through security and at the gate at least 30 minutes before departure — so aim to be airside by 5:25am. To arrive at the terminal with some comfort at 4:15am, you need to leave Clacton at around 3:15am to 3:30am. The A120 at 3am is completely empty — 55 minutes from Clacton to Stansted is realistic at that hour.

What this means in practice: book the taxi the day before, confirm the pickup for 3:15am, go to bed early. The driver arrives at your address at the time you booked. The fare is the same as any daytime journey — no overnight premium, no extra charge for unsociable hours.

⚠️ For flights before 7am at Stansted, do not rely on the train. The first Greater Anglia service from Clacton does not leave until around 5:30am on weekdays and later on weekends. Even if you caught it, you would not make a 6am Stansted departure. For any early morning flight, a pre-booked taxi the night before is the only option that reliably works.

Late-night returns

A lot of Ryanair and easyJet flights from Spanish and Mediterranean destinations arrive at Stansted late in the evening — 9pm, 10pm, and 11pm are common slots. When you book the return journey, give us your flight number. The driver tracks the flight from its departure airport. If your Malaga Ryanair is delayed by 90 minutes, the driver already knows before you land. They adjust their arrival time and are waiting inside arrivals when you walk out, regardless of what time that turns out to be.

Free waiting time is 45 minutes from the actual landing time — not the scheduled landing time. If the flight lands at 11:47pm instead of 10:15pm, the 45 minutes starts at 11:47pm. You have time to get through passport control and collect your bags without the driver charging extra.

Choosing the Right Vehicle

The vehicle you book depends on two things: how many people are travelling, and how much luggage you have. Every booking is a private taxi — no shared rides, no other passengers. The second one matters more than people expect. Four people going on a week's holiday have four large suitcases and probably four pieces of hand luggage. A standard saloon can handle that. But if anyone has oversized luggage — golf clubs, a pushchair, camping equipment — you might need the estate car instead.

8-Seater Minibus8Sports teams, large groups, maximum luggageFrom £130
Executive Saloon3Business travel, corporate clients, premium experienceFrom £120

The 7-seater is worth highlighting specifically — it is our most popular vehicle for group airport transfers. If you have 5, 6, or 7 people going from the same address, it is a single vehicle, a single booking, and one confirmed fare. Seven people in a 7-seater to Stansted at £100 total — that is £14.29 per person. Compare that to seven individual rail journeys with connections at £25 to £40 each. The group taxi wins on both cost and convenience. More on group travel in our minibus airport transfers page.

Tip for Frinton and Walton passengers: If you are travelling to Stansted very early in the morning, it is worth specifying your exact address rather than just the town name. The driver will plan the route from your door — the difference between Walton High Street and the seafront end of Walton is about 5 minutes, which matters if you have a tight connection time.

How Booking Works

Booking takes under 60 seconds. Enter your Clacton address on the GTT website, pick the airport and terminal, add your flight number, choose the vehicle. The fare appears immediately — that is the fixed price. You do not need to enter card details to book. Payment is made to the driver at the end of the journey, by cash or card.

Once the booking is confirmed, you get an email with all the details. Before the journey, you get a text message with the driver's name, mobile number, vehicle make, and registration plate. For airport arrivals, the driver is tracking your flight from the moment it departs its origin airport. If the flight is delayed, the driver knows. If it is cancelled, you call the number on the confirmation and the booking is adjusted.

  • For departures: book at least 24 hours ahead for normal journeys, the night before for early morning pickups (before 6am).
  • For group bookings (7-seater or minibus): 48 to 72 hours ahead to guarantee vehicle availability.
  • For peak periods — Christmas, August bank holiday, Easter — book when you book the flights.
  • Child seats are free. View our full vehicle fleet. Mention the child's age at booking.
  • Corporate accounts with monthly invoicing available for businesses in the Tendring area — see our corporate taxi page.
