Most London postcodes sit outside the Congestion Charge zone and the question never arises. SW1Y is not one of them. St James’s Square is about as central as an address gets, which means £18 applies between seven in the morning and six in the evening on a weekday — and nothing at all outside those hours. A six o’clock departure and an eight o’clock one take the same car down the same road for eighteen pounds apart. Fixed fares run £79 to £248, and the journey is fifty miles and an hour and twenty-six minutes.
SW1Y is inside the zone. Unusual for an airport transfer page, and it changes the arithmetic.

St James’s Square sits squarely inside the zone, a few hundred yards from Pall Mall and Piccadilly. That makes this one of the few airport routes where the clock costs money.

Read the second row across. A ten o’clock departure on a Tuesday pays eighteen pounds; the same departure on a Sunday pays nothing. Very little else about the journey changes.

The charge starts at seven. A car leaving St James’s Square at half past five for an early Gatwick departure crosses the zone for nothing, and meets lighter traffic on the way out.

The MPV-5 seats five and holds three cases. The Executive takes three with room for two. Those two rows account for most of the vehicles that turn up too small.

The £104 Executive Is Priced for the Arrival
A hundred and four takes three passengers with two cases, working out near thirty-five each; a hundred and fourteen takes six with five cases at nineteen. Judged on capacity that is nonsense, and deliberately so.

An hour and twenty-six minutes covers fifty miles, and what varies is the opening mile or two. Getting out of St James’s and south through the city is where a bad morning shows up; the motorway behaves.

The desk closes forty to sixty minutes ahead, so the deadline you are really chasing lands an hour ahead of the printed time. A three-hour buffer is two once the desk is counted.
Gatwick’s early security queues run longer than the early hour implies, so aiming at the front of any window is the sensible instinct.

A private hire vehicle has to be booked in advance; England reserves street hailing to licensed hackney carriages. That comes from licensing rather than any estate rule.

The drive differs by about two minutes, so the price does not change. What does change is where you need to be standing.

The two halls stand apart with no road between them. Arriving at the wrong one means leaving the airport and returning by the other approach, which costs about a quarter of an hour and the forecourt twice.

Allocations shift between seasons, so the hall a carrier used last season settles nothing. Your flight number names the building and stays right should the carrier switch buildings after you book.

Victoria Is a 12-Minute Walk, So the Express Competes
This is the one route on this site where rail is genuinely convenient from the door, and glossing over that would serve no one.
London Victoria is within walking distance of the square, and the Gatwick Express runs a fast service from there. Daylight, and nothing but a cabin bag it is a good answer.

The walk is the part people underestimate. Pleasant enough with a laptop bag on a dry Tuesday, and quite different at five in the morning with two suitcases.
3 Rail Tickets Cost 3 Times; 1 Taxi Costs Once
A single fare on the Express is fine for one. For three it is three fares, for a family of four it is four, and the comparison closes fast.

Choosing a Taxi Class for a 50-Mile Run
Over fifty miles the boot matters more than usual, because nothing can be adjusted once you are moving.

Three saloons meet the eighteen pounds three separate times. One vehicle meets it once, which turns a fare difference of seventy pounds into a real difference of over a hundred.

1 Wheelchair Taxi, Held at the Depot for You
Wheelchair-capable vehicles are kept back at the depot rather than lifted off a rank, which is why the booking must carry the request, not brought with you.
Door to door removes the walk to Victoria and the change at the other end, which is exactly the point for anyone who finds those the difficult parts. Add it in the notes on the booking form.
ULEZ, Green Park and the Streets Around SW1Y
Two charges cover this postcode rather than one, and the second surprises people who have only heard of the first.

ULEZ runs around the clock across all of Greater London, and on paper St James’s sits inside it. In practice a licensed private hire vehicle meets the emissions standard, so the charge never reaches a passenger and never appears on a quote.

Of the four, Green Park is nearest and carries the Victoria line, which reaches Victoria station in a single stop. That is the quickest rail route out of SW1Y, and worth knowing before anyone plans around Piccadilly Circus.

The London Library and 3 Other Landmarks Here
The London Library sits at number 14, and the square carries embassies, private members’ clubs and company headquarters around all four sides. Several share near-identical Georgian frontages.
Which is exactly why the building number counts for more here than at a single-entrance hotel. Pall Mall, Piccadilly, Jermyn Street, Westminster and Mayfair are all within a few minutes, and we cover those postcodes on the same fixed basis through our Gatwick service.
