This hotel sits inside the Congestion Charge zone and says so on its own website. Every transfer company quoting for SE1 knows that, and most of them add eighteen pounds without asking a question that changes the answer entirely: what time are you leaving. The zone keeps office hours. A five in the morning departure for a Gatwick flight crosses no charging period at all, and neither does a Saturday run before noon. The charge is a property of the clock rather than of the postcode, and on the journeys this hotel's guests actually make it frequently does not apply.
The zone keeps office hours. Seven till six on a working day, noon till six at the weekend and on bank holidays. Beyond that, nil.
Most airport runs miss it. A 05:30 departure for a 09:00 flight crosses no charging period at all.
The drop-off is not on Westminster Bridge Road. It is reached from Addington Street, left-hand lane.
Hotel parking is £70 a day. Three nights and a car in the zone rarely beats two transfers.
The SE1 Congestion Charge Runs on a Clock, Not a Map
Every page about transfers from this hotel says the same thing: SE1 is inside the zone, add eighteen pounds. The hotel itself confirms the first half, stating on its own site that it sits within the charging area and that paying is the vehicle owner's responsibility.
What almost nobody adds is when the zone is actually charging.
| Day | Charging hours | An airport run at 05:30 |
|---|---|---|
| Monday to Friday | 07:00 – 18:00 | Nothing to pay |
| Saturday and Sunday | noon – 18:00 | Nothing to pay |
| Bank holidays | noon – 18:00 | Nothing to pay |
| Weekday, 09:00 departure from the door | Inside the window | £18 applies |
Read the bottom row against the three above it. The charge is not a property of the address at all — it is a property of whichever hour you happen to set out, and airport departures cluster at exactly the hours when it sleeps.
Ask Whether the Quote Assumes It
A fare for a 05:00 pickup that includes the Congestion Charge is charging you for something nobody will pay. It is not usually dishonesty so much as a pricing rule applied to a postcode without looking at the time field.
One question settles it: does this figure include the Congestion Charge, and does it need to. The zone boundaries and the exemption above eight seats appear in our guide to the charge.
Nine Seats and Above Are Exempt Regardless
Anything from nine seats upward carries a total discount at every hour of the day, which matters for a hotel of this size where group bookings are routine. A twelve-seater leaving SE1 at ten on a Tuesday morning pays nothing while an eight-seater beside it pays eighteen pounds.
That is a genuine reason to declare the real headcount rather than rounding down, and it applies to group transfers from anywhere inside the zone.
Which Park Plaza? The Mistake That Actually Happens
There are several Park Plaza hotels within a mile of each other on this side of the river, and travellers do arrive at the wrong one. It is a documented failure rather than a theoretical risk.
A guest asking for transfer help on a travel forum was told, bluntly, that if they did not know which Park Plaza they had booked they might well end up somewhere else — and that a driver needs the exact property, or they will be taken to the wrong one.
| Hotel | Postcode | Where it sits |
|---|---|---|
| Park Plaza London Westminster Bridge | SE1 7UT | 200 Westminster Bridge Road |
| Park Plaza County Hall | SE1 | Addington Street, a minute away |
| Park Plaza London Waterloo | SE1 7DP | Hercules Road, behind the station |
| Park Plaza London Riverbank | SE1 7TJ | Albert Embankment, further south |
Four properties, one brand, four different streets. County Hall sits on Addington Street, which is also the road the Westminster Bridge drop-off is reached from, so the two are genuinely easy to confuse from a booking form.
The Postcode Itself Is Not Consistent Online
The hotel and its Wikipedia entry both give SE1 7UT. At least one major transfer platform lists the same property as SE1 7FR. A driver handed the second one is heading for a different part of SE1 before anybody has noticed.
Give the full name and the postcode together, and if the booking form has a notes field, put the street in it too. That is thirty seconds against a fifteen-minute detour at the wrong reception.
Even the Drop-Off Instruction Disagrees With Itself
The hotel's directions page says the drop-off is reached from Addington Street heading towards York Road. Its published accessibility guide says the drop-off is accessed off Westminster Bridge. Both describe the same forecourt from different approaches.
In practice a driver who has been before knows it; one who has not benefits from the Addington Street version, since that is the approach that works from the south and east. Passing it on takes a sentence, and it is the kind of thing a pre-booked job carries in the notes while an app booking does not.
Where Your Taxi Collects You at Park Plaza
The hotel fronts onto Westminster Bridge Road, and that is not where a vehicle picks up. Its own directions are specific about this.
| What the hotel states | |
|---|---|
| Drop-off point | At the front, accessed from Addington Street |
| Approach | Heading towards York Road, staying in the left-hand lane |
| Valet parking | Offered |
| Electric charging | Two points at the front, free to guests |
| Hailing a minicab outside | Not permitted — must be pre-booked |
Passing the Addington Street instruction to a driver who has not been before saves a lap of a busy one-way system. It is the kind of detail a concierge knows and a booking form usually does not ask for.
The Hotel Confirms Why Pre-Booking Matters
Its own guidance says that only black cabs can be hailed off the street, and that minicabs cannot accept fares which have not been booked in advance. That is national licensing law rather than a house rule.
It follows that anyone approaching you outside offering a lift in an unmarked car is breaking it, whatever identification appears. The checks worth ten seconds are in our guide on checking a driver.
A Thousand Rooms Means a Busy Forecourt
With 1,019 rooms and 63 suites this is one of London's largest hotels, and the drop-off area handles a great deal of traffic at check-out time. Being downstairs at the agreed minute matters more here than at a fifty-room townhouse.
A pre-booked driver will normally message on arrival rather than come to reception, so have a phone to hand instead of buried in a case.

The Hotel Concierge Price, and What It Costs You
The hotel publishes its own car service rates on its website, and they are worth reading before you pick up the phone from your room.
| Booked through | One way to Gatwick | Return |
|---|---|---|
| Hotel concierge | £115 – £130 | £245 |
| Licensed operator, direct | from around £86 | about £172 as two singles |
| Upper end of the market | £137 | — |
Those are the hotel's own figures, not ours. Booking the car through reception costs roughly thirty to forty-five pounds more each way, and on a return the gap runs to about seventy.
Why the Concierge Still Has a Place
Convenience, and someone accountable in the building if anything goes wrong. On an unfamiliar trip with a tight schedule and no wish to compare anything, that premium buys a problem you no longer own.
What it does not buy is a different road or a faster car. The vehicle is frequently supplied by exactly the kind of licensed operator you could have called directly, with a margin added for the arrangement.
Book Both Legs Separately
The hotel's round-trip figure of £245 is not a discount on two one-ways — it is more than two singles bought from an operator. Whatever you decide, price the outbound and the return as separate journeys rather than assuming a return saves anything.
The same holds at Heathrow, where the hotel quotes £80 to £100 one way against operator fares from around £85. That gap is narrower, which is worth knowing if the concierge route appeals for one airport and not the other. Our route pricing sets out where the market actually sits.
SE1 to Gatwick: the Distances Nobody Agrees On
Compare a handful of pages for this hotel and the numbers stop lining up, sometimes within a single article.
| Claim | Where | Assessment |
|---|---|---|
| "Roughly 28 to 39 miles" | One operator page | An eleven-mile range for one route |
| 1 hour 1 minute | Same page as 1h 20m | Self-contradictory |
| 1 hour 6 minutes | Another operator | Plausible on a clear road |
| 1 hour 22 minutes | Comparison platform | Realistic average |
Routing tools place the driving distance around 28 miles. The eleven-mile spread in the top row is not measurement variation, it is a page that has not been checked.
Which Figure to Plan Around
Take the longer times seriously and the shorter ones as a best case. Fifty-five minutes happens at five in the morning; an hour and twenty happens on a weekday afternoon, and both are true.
What matters for a flight is the range rather than the average, because a schedule built on the average fails half the time by definition.
Separate Pages for Each Terminal
Several operators publish one page for Gatwick South and another for Gatwick North from this hotel, with the same content and a different heading. The drive is identical; only the final approach road differs.
That is why this page covers both rather than splitting them. Which one you need comes from the flight number, and it gets fixed on the reservation, not somewhere on the M23.
Any figure worth comparing is the total for the journey, not a rate multiplied by a mileage somebody guessed. Our route pricing breakdown is built that way, and the Gatwick transfers page quotes from the postcode itself.
Park Plaza Parking at £70 a Day, or Two Transfers
Worth working through properly, because the hotel's parking is expensive and cannot be reserved.
| Own car | Two transfers | |
|---|---|---|
| Hotel parking | From £70 per day | None |
| Three nights | From £210 | — |
| Congestion Charge | Each charging day you drive | Only if the run is in hours |
| Can you reserve a space? | No — first come, first served | Yes, at booking |
| Useful if | You need the car during the stay | You do not |
Two hundred and ten pounds before the charge, with no guarantee of a space on arrival, is a poor deal unless the car is doing work while you are in London.
The Space You Cannot Book
The hotel is explicit that parking is allocated first come, first served and cannot be pre-booked. Arriving on a Friday evening with a car and no fallback is a situation worth avoiding.
Alternative self-parking exists nearby, including at Upper Marsh in Waterloo, which the hotel points to directly. That solves the space problem without solving the cost one.
What the Charge Adds Over a Stay
| Days you enter the zone | Charge | Plus parking from |
|---|---|---|
| One | £18 | £70 |
| Three | £54 | £210 |
| Five | £90 | £350 |
Auto Pay registration costs £10 a year and takes the daily rate down slightly, which helps a resident and does almost nothing for a visitor staying three nights.
The comparison that actually matters is against two airport transfers, one each way, with nothing to park and nothing to register. Our route pricing sets out where those land.
Park Plaza's Own Taxi Prices, and Why They Cost More
This is the most useful thing on the page and it comes from the hotel rather than from us. Its directions page lists approximate concierge fares, and the Gatwick figure is well above what independent operators charge for the same road.
| Destination | Hotel concierge | Independent operators |
|---|---|---|
| Gatwick, one way | £115 – £130 | around £86 |
| Gatwick, round trip | £245 | roughly £172 as two singles |
| Heathrow, one way | £80 – £100 | £77 – £85 |
| Heathrow, round trip | £185 | around £160 as two singles |
Read the top two rows. Booking Gatwick through the desk costs somewhere between twenty-nine and forty-four pounds more each way, and on a return that gap reaches roughly seventy pounds.
Convenience Has a Price, and Here It Is Stated
None of this is a criticism of the hotel. A concierge arranging a car on your behalf is doing work, the vehicle is usually an executive class rather than a saloon, and for a guest who wants one phone call and no comparison shopping that premium is a fair trade.
What is unusual is that the hotel publishes the number, which lets you decide with the figures in front of you rather than after the fact. Most properties do not.
If You Do Use the Concierge
The team can be reached in advance rather than on the morning, which matters at a property of this size. Booking ahead is the point either way, since the hotel itself confirms a minicab cannot legally take an unbooked fare from the door.
Whichever route you choose, ask the same three questions: is the Gatwick forecourt levy inside the figure, does the quote assume the Congestion Charge, and what waiting is included after a delayed landing. Our route pricing breakdown shows what those answers usually look like.
Gatwick Back to Westminster Bridge: the Return Leg
The hotel spells out its own recommended rail return, and it is worth reading before assuming it is the easy option.
| Leg | What it involves |
|---|---|
| 1 | Gatwick Express to London Victoria |
| 2 | Circle or District line eastbound to Westminster |
| 3 | Walk south across Westminster Bridge, cross the roundabout |
Three legs, one of them on foot across a bridge, with whatever luggage you are carrying and whatever the weather is doing. On a July afternoon that is a pleasant arrival; in February with two cases which explains why so many guests take the train out and a car back.
The Return Leg Is the Forgiving One
Arriving, the deadline sits behind you rather than ahead. A late inbound simply moves the pickup, no vehicle having left base during the flight itself, and the allowance running from touchdown.
That is the opposite of the outbound, where bag drop closes on schedule regardless of the traffic. Planning the two legs separately rather than as a matched pair is the practical takeaway, and our late-arrivals guide sets out what the market covers.
The Other Park Plaza Properties Nearby
Park Plaza London Waterloo at SE1 7DP, Park Plaza County Hall and Park Plaza London Riverbank at SE1 7TJ all sit within a short walk, and all share this postcode's position inside the charging zone along with the same charging hours.
What differs is which street the drop-off faces, so the pickup instruction changes while the arithmetic does not. Anything in SE1 can be quoted from the same Gatwick transfers page.
Waterloo Sits Four Minutes Away and Cannot Help
The hotel sits beside one of Britain's busiest stations, which sounds like an advantage until you check where its trains go.
Waterloo serves the south west. Gatwick is not on it.
| Route | Changes | What it involves |
|---|---|---|
| Jubilee to London Bridge, then Thameslink | One | Runs through to both terminals |
| Tube to Victoria, then the Gatwick Express | One | Faster train, longer connection |
| Waterloo direct | Not possible | No Gatwick service |
Experienced travellers put it more sharply than we would: on travel forums the standing advice for this hotel is to ignore the dearer Gatwick Express and take Thameslink to London Bridge or Southern to Victoria instead, both of which run just over thirty minutes at their quickest. The hotel's own directions recommend the Express. The Thameslink option is the better of the two from this address. It is a short hop on the Jubilee line and then one train serving both the southern and northern halls, meaning a mix-up over halls costs you nothing.
When Rail Beats a Car From Here
One person with hand luggage, travelling in daylight. The Thameslink route is quick, cheap and involves one change, and no car competes with it on cost. We sell transfers and we will still say so.
It stops competing with hold luggage, once children, a pre-dawn hour or a third passenger enter the picture, because tickets multiply by person whereas one car carries one price. Our rail-against-road comparison pins down where the balance tips.
When to Leave Westminster Bridge Road for Gatwick
Begin at the bag-drop deadline and subtract, rather than adding forward from reception, and notice how the charging window overlaps with the answer.
| Flight departs | Leave SE1 | Congestion Charge |
|---|---|---|
| 07:00 | 03:30 | Not payable |
| 09:00 | 05:30 | Not payable |
| 12:00 | 08:00 | £18 on a weekday |
| 18:00 | 14:00 | £18 on a weekday |
| 21:00 | 17:00 — or 18:15 if you can | Depends by fifteen minutes |
The last row is the interesting one. A departure at 17:00 pays and a departure at 18:15 does not, across an identical trip on one calendar day, which is worth knowing when a flight time gives you any latitude at all.
Bag Drop Shuts an Hour Ahead
Desks close between forty and sixty minutes ahead of wheels-up, which puts the deadline you are chasing about sixty minutes ahead of the printed departure. A four-hour buffer is really three once the desk is accounted for.
On the return leg the deadline sits behind you instead, and a late inbound is absorbed rather than fatal. What the market includes after landing is in our late-arrivals guide.
SE1 to Gatwick Taxi Fares by Vehicle, and What Each Holds
The UK's largest cab comparison service, pooling quotes across a thousand-plus licensed firms, places Gatwick to Waterloo at around £82 for a saloon. That is the benchmark worth measuring everything else against.
| Class | Passengers | Hold bags | Published fares |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saloon | 3–4 | 2 | £76 – £132 |
| Estate | 3–4 | 3 | around £138 |
| Executive | 3 | 2 | Above saloon |
| MPV, five seats | 5 | 4 | around £150 |
| MPV, six or seven seats | 6 to 7 | Six cases | around £174 |
| Eight seats | 8 | 7 | from around £160 |
| Minibus | up to 16 | Varies | On application |
The saloon row spans fifty-six pounds for one road, and the concierge figure of £115 to £130 sits near the upper end of it rather than outside it. Against the £82 benchmark that is a premium of thirty-three to forty-eight pounds.
Seats Are Not the Constraint, Boots Are
One operator puts the rule plainly in its own pricing notes: luggage space rather than seat count is usually the limit. A saloon carries three or four people and two large cases, so four travellers each with a suitcase are already in estate territory.
Note the six-seat MPV row. Six passengers and six hold bags is the first combination where a family genuinely fits without anything on a lap, and it is why holiday bookings from a hotel of this size skew larger than the headcount suggests.
Eight Seats Costs Less Per Head
An eight-seater from around £160 looks expensive beside a saloon at £82 until you divide. Eight people pay twenty pounds each; two people in a saloon pay forty-one.
It also clears the Congestion Charge threshold if the vehicle has nine seats or more, which removes the £18 even inside charging hours. That combination makes larger vehicles the cheapest option per person on this route by some margin.
What the Benchmark Includes
Comparison platforms quote with the Gatwick drop-off levy already inside the figure, along with meet and greet at arrivals, live flight tracking and around forty-five minutes of free waiting after landing. Some individual operators publish sixty.
That matters when weighing a cheaper headline against a dearer one. A fare twelve pounds lower that adds the £10 levy afterwards has kept two pounds of its advantage. Full route pricing sits in our fare breakdown.
Which Vehicle Suits a Park Plaza Pickup
Boot volume settles this well ahead of the passenger tally, and a hotel with over a thousand rooms produces the awkward combinations regularly.
| Class | Seats | Hold bags | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saloon | 4 | 2 | Two with cases, or four travelling light |
| Estate | 4 | 3 | Four with hold luggage |
| MPV, five to seven | 5–7 | 4–6 | Families, suites, longer stays |
| Nine seats and above | 9–16 | Varies | Groups — and exempt from the charge |
The last row earns its place twice over from this address: it carries the group, and it removes the Congestion Charge even in the middle of a Tuesday.
Suites and Family Rooms Under-Order
Reserving by bedroom instead of by boot capacity is what most often produces a spare car outside. Four adults fit a saloon; four adults plus four cases will not, and nothing rescues that at 05:30 on a dark forecourt.
Declare passengers and hold bags separately and the class is chosen before the car leaves base. Load figures sit on the fleet page.
Gatwick South or North Terminal From SE1
Two separate buildings with no internal road, so this is settled before departure rather than on the approach.
| South Terminal | North Terminal |
|---|---|
| BA and Virgin Atlantic | easyJet and Jet2 |
| Vueling, TUI mostly | Ryanair and Emirates |
| Rail station directly beneath | No station — shuttle across first |
Turn up at the wrong hall and the car quits the site to re-enter by the other road: a quarter-hour gone and the forecourt paid twice.
Thameslink Reaches Both, a Car Reaches One
That is the small argument for rail on a flight you are unsure about. both halls sit on the Thameslink route, so a last-minute terminal change costs nothing; a booked car has to be told.
The flight number settles it and stays correct if the airline moves the allocation after you book. The pair are written up in the Gatwick index.
Step-Free Travel From Park Plaza to Gatwick
Worth setting out because the nearby stations differ sharply, and the obvious choice is not the accessible one.
| Station | Distance | Step-free? |
|---|---|---|
| Westminster Underground | 0.3 mi | Yes, to platforms |
| Waterloo Underground | 0.3 mi | Jubilee line only |
| Waterloo National Rail | 0.4 mi | Yes, via Cab Road |
| Waterloo East | Linked to Waterloo | Steep ramps to platforms |
Note the second row. Waterloo Underground has four lines and only the Jubilee is step-free, which rules out the Northern and Bakerloo routes for anyone with a wheelchair or a heavy case.
A Car Removes the Question
Door to terminal with the luggage handled once is the reason accessible travel and pre-booked transfers go together, and it is a practical point rather than a sales one.
A wheelchair-capable car is earmarked back at the depot, so that request belongs on the reservation and not on the pavement. Details are on our accessible transfers page.
Buses and the River, for Completeness
A stop 150 metres away at St Thomas' Hospital County Hall carries routes 12, 53, 148, 159, 211 and 453 plus night services N109, N155 and N381. None reaches Gatwick, but they cover central London well should the flight sit late in the day.
London Eye Millennium Pier sits on the river a short walk north, which is a pleasant way into the City and no use whatsoever for an airport.
