Terminal 2 Layout — T2A and T2B Explained

Terminal 2 is split into two buildings, and the difference between them catches out passengers who assume it works like Terminal 5. T2A is the main building — the huge terminal most passengers picture, with check-in, security, shops, lounges and arrivals all under one roof. T2B is a separate satellite structure out on the airfield, reachable only by an underground walkway.

The Walk to T2B Is Longer Than It Looks on the Map

Once you clear security in T2A, if your gate is shown with a B prefix, follow the signs to the underground walkway. Unlike Terminal 5's automated Transit train, T2 has no train between its buildings — T2B is connected purely by a walkway roughly 800 metres long, fitted with moving travelators for much of the distance.

Which Airlines Fly from Terminal 2

Terminal 2 is Heathrow's dedicated Star Alliance hub, serving around 25 carriers from the world's largest airline alliance.

Always confirm your terminal on your boarding pass rather than assuming from the alliance alone. Aer Lingus is the clearest exception to the pattern: it joined oneworld in March 2025 but continues operating from T2 rather than moving to T3 or T5 where other oneworld carriers are based. A handful of other non-aligned carriers — Icelandair, El Al and Middle East Airlines among them — are also based at T2.

Arriving at Terminal 2 — Realistic Timing from Gate to Exit

Whichever gate your flight docks at — T2A or the T2B satellite — every arriving passenger ends up in the same place: the T2A arrivals hall on the ground floor, after UK Border immigration and baggage reclaim.

The biggest variable is immigration, not baggage. T2's morning "US arrival rush" — when several transatlantic wide-body flights land within a short window — is when queues run longest. United Airlines and Air Canada flights from North America typically generate the largest queues given the volume of US and Canadian passport holders needing UK Border processing.

Departing from Terminal 2 — Check-In to Gate

For outbound passengers, the taxi drop-off point is the T2 departures forecourt, which leads directly into the T2A departures hall containing check-in and bag drop.

Getting to Terminal 2 — Rail Options

T2 shares its rail station with Terminal 3 at the central Heathrow station, unlike T5 which has its own separate branch terminus.

The Elizabeth Line offers the best balance of speed and value for most solo travellers, and connects directly from Liverpool Street, Farringdon, Whitechapel and Canary Wharf without needing to change at Paddington first. The Heathrow Express is marginally faster but the premium rarely justifies itself for most journeys.

Beyond the layout and taxi options, a few practical details make a real difference to how comfortable your time at T2 is, whether you are dropping someone off, waiting for an arrival, or have a few hours to fill before a flight.

Liquid Rules Have Changed at Heathrow

WiFi, Currency and Baggage

Heathrow provides free, unlimited high-speed WiFi throughout Terminal 2 — connect to the "Heathrow WiFi" network and complete a brief registration, with no time limit. Currency exchange and bureau de change desks are available both before and after security, though rates are generally better arranged in central London in advance. On arrival, baggage typically appears on the carousel within 20 to 25 minutes for long-haul flights and 15 to 20 minutes for European flights, across 10 carousels clearly labelled by flight number on overhead screens.

Shopping, Lounges and Families

T2A has around 40 shops, including the only airport branch of John Lewis in the UK, alongside Harrods, Burberry, Mulberry and World Duty Free. For passengers without airline status or a premium card, the Plaza Premium Lounge sells day passes to any ticket holder, typically £40 to £50 for around 3 hours, in addition to the airline-specific lounges such as the United Club and Lufthansa lounge. Families travelling with young children can use the dedicated play area in the T2A departure lounge after security, near Gate 16, suitable for ages 0 to 9 and staffed by an accompanying adult at all times.

Parking and the Nearby Hotel

Heathrow's official parking at T2 includes Terminal Parking (the closest option, a short walk from departures or arrivals), Park & Ride (the cheapest pre-bookable option, with a free shuttle to the terminal), and Meet & Greet, where a driver takes the car directly from the terminal forecourt. Pick-up from the forecourt itself is not permitted — the nearest collection point is the Terminal Parking car park or the Park & Ride car park, which offers 29 minutes free.
